Taking a day to ourselves

In the midst of the end of Summer, back to school, crazy busy fall Hubby and I stole a day away to celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary! Kevin has spent a lot of time on the west side of Jo Daviess County, so I thought a great anniversary present would be to spend a day being explorers to places we haven’t been before and a few we had.

Thanks to a fantastic new business here in Elizabeth; Galena Jeep Rentals (815) 858-0450 https://www.facebook.com/galenajeeprentals/  I was able to rent a Jeep for the day. Fortunately we had amazing weather, the sun was out and it was warm. So off we went to do a little work before we went adventuring, we had a potential homeowner call wanting us to look at a house, of course we were happy to accommodate. IMG_8588As we left The Galena Territory we came upon a trail ride. This may be one of my favorite sights to see is people out riding…

Our First stop was a  place neither of us had been to. Council Hill Station, its been around for a very long time just not on our radar but I tell you we can’t wait to go back. https://www.facebook.com/councilhillstation/

The Vibe was chill and easy for a Sunday. The music was fantastic and the beer was cold.
$2.00 cover charge to get into the barn and see the band. You could wander the property outside, stick your feet in the creek and get a beer at the house with no cover but the band Driftless Sisters was of course worth it. There were a lot of people out the day we were there but because of the set up it never felt crowded. and the crowd was friendly.

From Council hill Station we drove around taking our time, eventually stopping downtown Galena at EMBYs for a drink, the menu is so creative, they have a drink called The Fat Elvis which is a martini with peanut butter in it, I will have one next time.  Mary makes the best Pomegranate martini, its my go to, Kevin had an old fashioned he says was equally delicious. And because we are parents of two littles we had to have a Kahlua coffee while we were there as well so we could stay awake through our awesome dinner to come.

From downtown Galena we headed south on Blackjack Rd about 5 miles to the Goldmoor Inn for a most delicious dinner. https://www.facebook.com/goldmoorinn/ We pulled up and the grounds and view are just spectacular. Again we wanted to try something neither of us had done before both being Foodies we are always looking for our next favorite spot. We walked in and the dining room is a very unique set up, there is a cluster of tables in the bar area, and you walk down a short hallway with three circular booths that face out to windows and at the end of that is a larger room with one large table that I believe sat 12-16 people. We were happy to be seated in a booth and began our meal with a lovely chardonnay…. Kevin had the Hanger steak with a truffle, wild mushroom risotto and asparagus. I had the Duck breast on scalloped potatoes with roasted brussels sprouts in an orange demi glaze reduction. Ummm to say the food was amazing would be an understatement. My dinner was delightful and perfectly prepared, but that risotto did awesome things to my brain, it was so delicate and flavorful they just nailed it… That alone will have us coming back. We ended our meal with a blueberry bread pudding about double the size we needed but we did get to bring half of it home intending to pass it on and share with our brother in law but he never got any because that too even the next day was mouth watering deliciousness. The service was fantastic, we never felt rushed and just an awesome overall experience.

We ended the evening driving home in the dark chilly fall air with the top down and the heat on both feeling so satisfied. It is always amazing to me what taking time for yourself and your loved one does for the soul…..
